What is Transporter ???

Membrane transporters are membrane-associated proteins that govern the transport of solutes like drugs and other xenobiotics into and out of cells.

Different types of Membrane Transpoters
=>Based on gene family
ATP-binding cassette (ABC) family transporters
ABCB1 (P-gp): Permeability Glycoprotein
ABCG2 (BCRP): Breast Cancer Resistance Protein
ABCC (MRP) : Multi-resistance Protein
ABCC11(bile salt exporter pump, BSEP)
Solute carrier (SLC) family transporters
SLCO1B1 (OATP)
SLC22A6 (OAT): Organic Anion Transporter
SLC22A2 (OCT): Organic Cation Transporter
Peptide transporter (PEPT)
Nucleoside transporter (NT)

=>Based on Function
Uptake transporters
OATP, OAT, OCT, Peptide Transporter

=>Efflux transporters : ABC, MRP, MDR, BCRP

P-gp Located in Liver,Intestine, Brain, Kidney
It expell drug from lumenal cells to GIT and so reduce bioavaibility.Same action in kidney,liver and brain.In cancer cell P-gp is highly expressed so it producing resistance by flushing the drugs out of cell.
